Thursday, October 21, 2021

On October 20, 2021, SWF Director of Program Planning Dr. Brian Weeden participated in a virtual panel discussion on "Developing the Space Safety Institute" as part of the 11th International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety (IAASS) Conference, which was held virtually from 19-21 October, 2021. The IAASS Conference brings together experts from around the world to discuss how to improve the safety of space activities. The Space Safety Institute (SSI) is a concept proposed by the Aerospace Corporation for an  organization that would provide independent analysis and advice on space safety issues. Dr. Weeden's panel discussed how the SSI could play a positive role in both orbital and suborbital spaceflight safety, including how it could address the current gaps in analytical capabilities for informing regulation of large constellations, orbital debris mitigation, and commercial space tourism.
