SWF Participates in the 2015 ISU Space Studies Program in Athens, Ohio

Project Manager Chris Johnson served as a Guest Lecturer in the Space Policy, Economics, and Law (PEL) department for two weeks, where topics under discussion included the international political and legal framework for space activities. Chris also conducted a mock session of the United Nations, where participants attempted to develop a draft international treaty for Mars. The outcome of this workshop will be presented at this year’s International Astronautical Congress, in Israel in October.

Technical Advisor Brian Weeden was one of three guest lecturers taking part in the Space Debris Theme Day where participants learned about the challenges of space debris and the technical, legal, policy, and economic challenges in mitigating and removing it.

Lastly, Executive Director Mike Simpson participated in the Space Management and Business departmental activities and conducted a policy briefing for the research team working on Planetary Defense. For the Management students, Simpson discussed the impact of the multilateral policy environment on business planning.  His presentation to the Planetary Defense team focused on lessons learned from the development of the two international institutions, the International Asteroid Warning Network and the Space Mission Planning Advisory Group that were established in 2013.
