The December/January issue of the American Astronautical Society's (AAS) Space Times features two articles co-written by SWF Project Manager Laura Delgado López.
"Beyond the Flare: Highlights from an AAS-SWF Briefing on Space Weather" features the high points of a Congressional briefing co-hosted by SWF and AAS on November 2014. The goal of the event was to raise awareness of space weather events and their impacts, as well as ongoing efforts to better understand and respond to these events. Experts from the National Aeronatuics and Space Administration, the Space Weather Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), PJM Interconnection, the U.S. Air Force, and the Department of State described the forecasting and communication challenges of space weather, and international and national efforts in this area.
"Overcoming Extreme Weather: Informing a Weather-Ready Nation" captures the highlights of a September 2014 Google+ hangout that brought together current and future weather experts to share updates on advancements in science and technology, and highlight the value of Earth observation in decision making. The virtual panel featured speakers from the National Weather Service/ NOAA, the Washington Post, the Weather Channel, Millersville University, and the University of Georgia.
Ms. Delgado López, who moderated the discussion during both events, serves on the AAS Board of Directors.
