Insight - Telling the Story of Space Activity
by Krystal Azelton, Director of Space Applications Programs

Given the exciting developments in space activity - from new launch capabilities to expanding commercial satellite services to government research and missions to the Moon - how does the public view space activity? Is the average citizen of this planet interested, excited, and supportive? Or are they skeptical, worried about wasted resources, and wanting to focus more on terrestrial research for climate change and other pressing problems? What about politicians, investors, and other stakeholders who are key in providing funding and policy support for our work?

SWF Applauds Senators for Introducing the ORBITS Act
In mid-September, Senators Hickenlooper, Lummis, Cantwell and Wicker introduced the Orbital Sustainability (ORBITS) Act, a bi-partisan bill that, if passed, will improve space traffic coordination. As an organization focused exclusively on the long-term sustainability of space activities for benefits on Earth, Secure World Foundation commends this bill and supports this approach to dealing with the threat of space debris. We believe the ORBITS Act is a significant next-step in solving one of the greatest challenges to space activities today. Learn more, here.

NASA ROSES Grant
SWF Director of Program Planning, Dr. Brian Weeden, was part of a team that won a NASA grant to study orbital debris. The team, which includes Middlebury College and the University of Colorado at Boulder, will develop a model that integrates astrodynamics and economic behaviour to better assess policy options for space environmental management.

Second Regulator-to-Regulator Dialogue on Approaches to Licensing of Large Constellations
SWF organized and hosted a workshop with a group of regulators and space debris and space environmental management experts to discuss challenges and approaches to oversight and licensing of large constellations. This workshop, held on the margins of the IAC in Paris, was the second workshop SWF has hosted on this topic in 2022. It brought together national regulators from multiple countries to discuss with each other these challenges, their approaches to licensing large constellations, and potential solutions, with a case focus on the topic of orbital carrying capacity.
