Insight - Preventing Collisions in Space

by Director of Program Planning Brian Weeden

One of the most critical topics in space sustainability is how to minimize, or ideally prevent altogether, collisions between two space objects. Such collisions, whether deliberate or accidental, have historically created hundreds to thousands of pieces of orbital debris in each event. These pieces of debris can persist in orbit for years, and pose a hazard to other active satellites. Although outer space is vast, many important satellites and space activities are concentrated in relatively small regions where much of the space debris happens to be concentrated. Preventing collisions is a key part of reducing the creation of orbital debris and thus ensuring the long-term sustainability of space activities for future generations.

Updated Fact Sheets on Anti-Satellite Weapons, RPOs, and the X-37B
SWF has released updated versions of eleven fact sheets on ASAT testing in space, RPOs conducted in Earth orbit, and the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle. Together, these activities have generated concerns from many countries about the increasingly contested nature of space. The SWF fact sheets provide updated factual information on the current status of these capabilities and assessments of their impact on space security and sustainability. More details and links to all the fact sheets can be found
here.

New Infographic on Anti-Satellite Weapons
Secure World Foundation is proud to present an infographic developed in partnership with
Visual Capitalist on the debris created by anti-satellite (ASAT) weapons.

SWF Co-Sponsors Workshop on Preventing Collisions in Space
SWF co-sponsored the 2022 Kinetic Space Safety Workshop, which took place in Lausanne, Switzerland, May 4-5, 2022. The workshop brought together international technical experts and satellite operators to discuss specific solutions and pragmatic actions to enhance collisional space safety in low Earth orbit (LEO). Over the course of two days, participants examined the current state-of-the-art in spacecraft impact tolerance, collision avoidance, debris prevention and debris remediation, and what additional steps needed to be taken to prevent collisions and increase safety in LEO.
