SWF Addresses COPUOS

Addressing the General Session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), SWF Executive Director Michael Simpson noted the many ways in which the Foundation’s activity in 2015 had advanced objectives it shared with the Committee. Citing projects in capacity building, human security, space governance, disaster response and resilience, and space sustainability, Dr. Simpson emphasized that in 2015 alone, SWF has been involved in actions on five continents. The SWF statement also noted that issues of competition between terrestrial and space-based uses of radio spectrum were growing in their potential to impact the sustainability of space applications serving people on Earth. SWF Highlights Bilateral Cooperation and DIsaster Risk Management in Apogeo Spatial Articles

SWF Project Manager Laura Delgado López contributed an article highlighting the value of bilateral cooperation in Earth observations and discussing recent developments in two long-standing bilateral partnerships: the United States and India, and China and Brazil.

Report on the Principles of Self Defense in Outer Space Now Available

On Tuesday, March 31, 2015 the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) and SWF hosted a small, closed-door meeting focused on understanding how the principles of the right to self-defense may be applied to the outer space domain. The meeting discussed key issues such as the concept of an armed attack for outer space, proportional responses, the principle of distinction in outer space, and frequency interference. SWF Participates in the Global Space Innovation Conference

SWF Executive Director Michael Simpson moderated a panel discussion at the Global Space Innovation Conference (GLIC) in Munich, Germany.  The GLIC event, sponsored by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), focused on discussion of the cultural, economic, and policy factors that are enabling entrepreneurial activity through the international space sector.  The panel moderated by Dr. Simpson covered the links between space-sector education programs and entrepreneurship. In addition to Dr. Simpson, the panel included representatives from Virginia Tech University, SkolTech,  Stanford University, and the International Space University.  The Secure World Foundation is a member of the IAF.  SWF Project Manager Ian Christensen also attended the GLIC conference.
